Topic: Accommodation / Transport Yes. After every hour or so. Minibuses (marshrutkas) start from Didube bus station—it’s easy to reach by metro. Price was recently something like 7 lari (3-4 euros). |

Topic: His Highness Kazbek / Walking to the summit... Jacek, I can recommend exploring the Keli vulcanic plateau, located around 42°28’28”N 44°20’7”E. Peaks there reach 3600 m (Sherkhota, Khorisar). Here are some accounts in Russian: http://www.tkg.org.ua/node/4238 (includes a very handy map and a route) and http://bansheezm.livejournal.com/30469.html. Kazbek can be seen from there and the view is otherwise very nice. Unfortunately I cannot recommend any higher summit around – I have too little experience. |

Topic: General Questions / Arriving to Thbilisi in the night Tbilisi downtown is 20 minutes drive from the airport. Yes, hotels do work at night. We just asked taxi driver to take us to the center, but then they also helped to find a hotel. Tbilisi hotels are quite expensive, we payed 70$ for 2 persons, but you can also find cheaper options. Topic: Sights and Walks / Truso Valley, glaciers and churches... Hallo, we have a good maps of area in the “Mountain house” close to main-square. If you dont wanna pay for car you can rent a mountain-bike. It is 20 lari per day. About security: I never heared about any problems except if you will go close to borders of South Osetia on the west you may meet they guerrila fighters guarding the borders but as I heared they do not attack on tourists. Last year they attacked only georgian soldiers but never killed anybody. But border is really far – at least two days walk on the west. Other places are safe and no problems there. |

Topic: General Questions / Currency exchange There is possibility to change your euros and dollars in kazbegi – in one resturant (go right on the Y crossing on the main square, then after ca 100 m there is a ground floor building with three doors – two shops and small restaurant where is possible to change). However this is unofficial. The exchange rate was almost the same asi in tbilisi, Only problem was if they don´t have georgian laris, so it was better to go there in the evening, when they have enough. |

Topic: General Questions / room reservation + how to get there Well, there are taxis just next to the airport, but the cost will be probably higher. If you don´t want to use standard marchrutka (from Didube station, cost 8 Lari, I guess the first in the morning will go at 7 o´clock), then it is possible to arrange it before – maybe it would be better to ask someone in Kazbegi than from Tbilisi. Contacts must give someone else, we have choosen the marchrutka way:-) |

Topic: General Questions / Buying food in Kazbegi We have a group of 7 mountain hikers going to Mt. Kazbegi. The plan is to arrange most of the foodstuff from Georgia, preferrably Kazbegi area. Is it possible to buy pasta, bread, vegetables, sugar, sweets, etc. locally in Kazbegi? Or should we make an extra stop in Tbilisi beforehand? Or is there a shopping option on the way from Tbilisi to Kazbegi? Cheers, Alari |

Topic: General Questions / room reservation + how to get there Hi there, we have a group of 7 mountain hikers going to mt. Kazbek in August. We arrive in Tbilisi at 3am. What’s the most reasonable way to get a hired minivan/small bus (or alternatively 2 cars) with a driver to pick us up from the airport and drive directly to Stepansminda? Is it possible to hitch them down in the airport or should we arrange it beforehand? What can be the approx. cost? Cheers, Alari |
